Shijira indigo dyed cotton in Kimono width (approx 38cm )
This cool, light weight cotton for summer Kimono (Yukata) is a speciality of Tokushima, a town on the island of Shikoku which has been a traditional centre of indigo dyeing for 350 years. The texture of Shijira results from the warp threads having a different tension and thickness. The cloth is soaked in hot water to emphasise this uneveness which makes it so attaractive.
